Nowadays, when I hear or read anything about habits, my mind boils it down to one thing: the principle of consistency.
If you think about it, we only form habits with consistency, either for good or evil.
Indeed, we become what we consistently, think, say and do. Because of this, I have chosen to see habits and consistency as one and the same.
Now, to understand the power of consistency (or habit) as I do, read the following from Og Mandino, the best-selling author of the, ‘Greatest Salesman in the World’ who wrote:
“In truth, the only difference between those who have failed and those who have succeeded lies in the difference of their habits.
Good habits (positive consistency) are the key to all success.
Bad habits (negative consistency) are the unlocked door to failure.
Thus, the first law I will obey, which precedes all others is: I will form good habits and become their slaves.”
While I don’t like the idea of becoming slaves to habits, whether good or bad, I certainly get the critical point Og Mandino is trying to pass across and it is this:
To ignore the power of consistency (habits) is to put ourselves at risk in our exploration of the future.
Indeed, consistency is the key to all personal achievements. It is the greatest leverage that super-successful elites employ to obtain great prizes which tend to elude most people, most of the time.
In this direction, a foremost American business philosopher, Jim Rohn also explains that: “Success comes as (purely) a result of consistent application of the basic fundamentals.” And he added that failure is the outcome of “errors of judgement repeated every day.”
In essence, everything boils down to consistency, and the question lies in whether it is positive or negative.
You see, our results will always be commensurate with the consistency with which we execute our strategies. Therefore, if we must master any principle of success above all others, it should be the principle of consistency.
In short, positive consistency is the be-all and end-all!
