“Real generosity toward the future lies in giving all to the present. ”_Albert Camus
I read about the idea of magnificent obsession in novel of Loyd C. Douglas by the same title. He explained it as being preoccupied with a noble ideal of living for the common good of other people.
As it turns one man alive has given meaning to this idea through his remarkable virtue of benevolence. His name is Charles Chuck Feeny.
Chuck decided that his own magnificent obsession would be to give away his multi-billion-dollar wealth to cater for the needs of world in which he lives. And we have influential people in the word that are witnesses to his big sacrifices.
On this pursuit, he adopts frugality in his own lifestyle. And his cause was even the inspiration behind The Giving Pledge according to Bill Gates and Warren Buffet.
In the words of Laurene Powell Jobs, the founder and President, Emerson Collective:
“Chuck Feeney is a true pioneer. Spending down his resources during his lifetime has inspired a generation of philanthropists, including me.
And his dedication to anonymous giving—and focus on addressing the problems of the day—reflect the strength of his character and social conscience.
We all follow in his footsteps.”
Again, while being notoriously frugal
in his personal choices, Chuck gave away huge sums in areas with high societal
impact to solve really big problems that can yield great results for today's generation and generations yet unborn.
In a few years from now, this generous man will be dead. And then it shall be up to you and me to keep the spirit of generosity alive in the best ways possible.
Remember, giving begins the receiving process both in this world and the world of the unseen.
